Answering the Call

Onè. Respè. Honor. Respect. Thank you for taking the time to visit and support our work. We live with purpose and gratitude upon the ancestral lands of the First Nation Caribbean Arawak and give thanks to the African Bossal, Maroon, Indigenous and Creole people who joined forces in 1804 as the Indigenous Army to disrupt the dominant economic world order by defeating Napoleon's armies and establishing the free black nation of Ayiti.

We honor the faith, courage and strategy it took for the revolutionaries to liberate themselves from the physical chains of oppression. However, the collective intention and unity that birthed Ayiti was short-lived and the internal fissures that divided the emerging nation were further exasperated by the colonial worlds' fear and racism towards the newly free black republic. Dubbed the "unfinished revolution"  by many, the following two hundred years of Ayiti's "ourstory" (as coined by Pan African historians such as Bayyinah Bello), have been undermined by political, economic and social injustice as well as the demonizing of all Afro-Indigenous spiritual belief systems and practices that connect people to the land and their ancestors.

At Fondation Espoir, we believe that in order for Ayitians to "emancipate from mental slavery" as sung by Bob Marley in "Redemption Song", we must actively work to dismantle the internal shackles that impede our transformation and once again gather to honor our original "agreement" to be gracious guardians of the land. We must cherish our elders and children and align with our Caribbean and global indigenous and maroons sisters and brothers to heal ourselves, our families and our communities.
For 30 years, 0ur programs and collaborations have focused intention, attention and energy on the healing process and facilitating spaces of learning, wellbeing and sustainable growth.

Though the road may be long and arduous at times, we serve with joy and solidarity and look to earth's resilience and regenerative essence to serve as our mentor, method and measure. We are bolstered by the words of Theodore Parker an influential 19th century American transcendentalist minister who inspired many, including  Rev. Martin Luther King “I do not pretend to understand the moral universe. The arc is a long one. My eye reaches but little ways. I cannot calculate the curve and complete the figure by experience of sight. I can divine it by conscience. And from what I see I am sure it bends toward justice.”
